Yesterday we left Boulder Colorado for Rocky Mountain National Park. We drove through Estes Park to get to trail ridge road. We then proceeded to climb to high altitude and into the Alaskan like tundra. The temperature was a good ten degrees colder than the temperature in Boulder that morning. We took a short break from driving to engage in throwing snowballs at each other. Our first megafauna sighting was a bachelor herd of seven bull elk, one of which was a giant six by six pointer. We arrived at the Alpine Visitors Center and took a short hike up to an overlook and were blessed to see a mature bull elk feeding not twenty five yards from the trail. After eating a quick lunch we then came down from twelve thousand feet and took a hike with a ranger. We discussed problems with the parks elk herd which is double of what it should be and how we could solve the problem. We then walked to the headwaters of the mighty Colorado River. There we tested the ph of the water which was 7.9. We were chased to the bus by a thunderstorm that quickly headed our way. For the rest of the afternoon we drove through western Colorado and also through the Colorado River canyon with three hundred foot rock formations towering over the road. We arrived in Grand Junction, our destination for the day and stayed in a local church. We then prepared ourselves for the next days rafting trip and got a much needed rest.
