Lars Åkerson reflects:
From some distance we could see the tremendous structure, curving as a giant
door. In its splendor, though, I couldn’t help but liken the St. Louis Arch to
that of McDonalds, where we had eaten twice that day. Not quite the tribute it
deserves; however, you must admit, the resemblance is striking. Boarding small
capsules direct out of 1950s science fiction, all resemblance to roller coasters
dissipated as they began creeping upwards. My first glance at the ground below
gave me the sensation of falling the entire 630 feet to the ground. In a moment,
I landed again on the viewing deck and enjoyed the views of St. Louis at night
and people throwing a Frisbee far below. The ride down seemed to pass much
faster, and upon “landing”, an energetic contingent of us decided to expend
our excess energy on the lawn in a game of keepaway.
