Talking a tour of Hesston College

"Hesston College was generous in giving us a pizza lunch, and piqued our curiosity by giving us a campus tour. After this, we used their computer lab to check and send E-mail, modify the web site, and generally get back in touch with the civilization that still exists (hopefully...) outside the bus. Chris also met another HAM operator, and talked radio talk with him for a few minutes."
-Mr. Bowman and Ethan Zook.

We had a number of bus rides. Here is Mr. Bowman thinking hard as he tries to figure out a computer problem.

"It takes Mrs. Gautcher to point out the beauty of Kansas--the brilliant blue skies, the billowing white clouds, the tall grasses and fields of wheat undulating in the gentle breeze. 'Look at the horizontal lines, look at the shades of green, look at the texture,' she points out to the students as we travel. 'The landscape is just beautiful.'"

" Sleep was welcomed. We pitched our tents in the Penner backyard under the trees. A beautiful place and a wonderful day."

"Mil Penner and his wife, Verna Lee, served us a very good home cooked meal of lasagna, salad with italian dressing, green beans and cooked carrots, rolls, tea/water, and a very good desert!"

"The couple at the farm had made dinner, and I really liked the salad, rolls, and dessert. Jenny and I took a few picturers and I ate a couple mulberries, but soon we went on our farm tour. He told us about how he replicated some long-grass prarie on his land. We walked through and he showed us which plants were which."
-Laura "Gertie" Bannister

"Mil Penner talked to the group about the prairie and how it look many years ago. He showed us the difference between the Tall-Grass Prairie and the Mid-Grass Prairie. Every so often Mil has to burn his "prairie" to help maintain it the same way that it was originally."

"Sustainability means living in a reasonably managed way to maintain a healthy lifestyle so that others can also live meaningful and positive lives."

"Streaks shining from the centermost point of light.
The glare makes me squint.
Through the glare I see the fields glistening.
The beauty is astounding.
The sun sinks behind the clouds as the glare slowly turns to a faded light.
The light continues to fade
Until the sun is below the horizon."

" After Mil talked, we met with Jim Yoder, chemistry and astronomy professor at Hesston College. He showed us some stars, and with binoculars, for the first time, I saw two of Jupiter's moons! He was a really neat guy."

Wes Jackson and the Group

"Today we went to The Land Institute. We walked around on a piece of prarie that had never been plowed before. We also talked to Wes Jackson, who is trying to grow wheat in a setting like the prarie. This would make the fields more resistant to soil loss."
