After meeting Wes Jackson on Sunday in Kansas, we hopped on the bus to go to an elementary school in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska to sleep for the night. Jim Morley was very kind to arrange our stay there.

To the left, our group gathers for a picture in front of the motor coach. The church behind us is Fort Calhoun Presbyterian, where some generous members of the congregation served us pancakes Monday morning. Jim Morley coordinated the meal and told us about the history of their town that is connected with Lewis and Clark. Photo by Mrs. Gautcher.

Mrs. Diener and Ethan walk along the edge of a replica of Fort Atkinson on Monday morning. This fort was built on the land Lewis and Clark thought would be a good place for a fort. Photo by Mr. Schrock.

At every campsite, we unload our giant load of baggage from the coach and set up camp. Here we have just arrived at our campsite for the night at Lewis and Clark State Park in Iowa. This is the site where we had a terrifying thunder and hail storm. Photo by Mr. Schrock.

Here we are just after setting up our tents. To the right, Melissa is journaling beside her tent. Photos by Mr. Schrock.

One of our favorite activities is ultimate frisbee, which we played at our campsite on Monday after we set up camp. Photos by Mr. Schrock.

While at the Lewis and Clark State Park, we rode on a replica of Lewis and Clark's keelboat. The weather was so nice. It was warm and sunny, so most of us went swimming afterwards at a beach nearby. Photos by Mr. Schrock.

The keelboat sailed along the lake. David peeks out the window of the boat's cabin and smiles. Tim points a gun off the boat, aiming for something over on land. Photos by Mr. Schrock.

To the left, Mrs. Gautcher helps out with the keelboat's sail. Photo by Mr. Schrock.

On Tuesday morning while driving towards Sioux City, Iowa, we stopped at this monument. This obelisk (left) is a memorial for Sergeant Floyd, the only man to die on Lewis and Clark's journey. Jared (right) stands just beyond the monument with the Missouri River behind him. Both photos by Mrs. Gautcher.

We also made another stop to look at a museum and eat lunch. Our "Lewis", "Clark", and their "dog" Seaman pose (below left) in front of a statue of the original three expedition members. Jenny stands and smiles, but Laura fell asleep on the Newfoundland's tail. Bottom left and right photos by Esther. Bottom middle photo by Renee.

Jenny, Laura, and Esther stand behind a banner in the college gym that we slept in Tuesday night. The school was a Catholic institution of the Franciscan order. It was called Briar Cliff University. Mrs. Gautcher met someone from the university in a coffee shop while we were doing laundry on Tuesday and they offered to let us stay in their gym. We were very grateful for the offer. We had previously planned to camp outside under the threat of severe thunderstorms. After Monday night's adventure, we definitely did not want to experience another violent storm. Photo by Mr. Yoder

Chris, Jenny, Nate, Renee and Regina use the laptops on the coach. On the long rides from state to state, there is plenty of time to work on the computers and other activities. Esther's favorite bus activity is sleeping. Jenny loves the bus rides and her favorite activites are listening to music, watching the pretty scenery pass by, and doing stuff on the computers (like making this webpage). Laura's favorite activities are eating, reading books, quilting (we each have to make a quilt block),and listening to music. Photo by Esther.
