Discovery
2005: American Southwest will utilize the entire nation as our classroom,
relying upon a diverse collection of experiential learning strategies and
persons to enhance dialogue centered around current issues affecting
ourselves, our nation, and our world.
To explore the need for sustainability and
focused management of our nation's natural resources we will:
investigate soil quality issues associated with agriculture
including innovative ways to provide food for a growing nation and
world without continued degradation of our nation's topsoil;
discover the impact of human activity, both historical and
current, upon the mighty Colorado River from the point of inception
(glacier) to the salt flats of Mexico, exploring possible solutions;
explore alternative energy prospects that could compliment and/or
possibly alleviate our current dependency upon fossil fuels;
expand our knowledge and appreciation of marine life and the
delicate tapestry of relationships necessary for their continued
existence.
To discover the historical background of
Americans in the southwest and current issues affecting their
relationships we will:
visit at least two Indian nations and seek to understand Native
American issues and concerns;
learn about issues of immigration affecting people in both
countries at the United States/Mexico border and seek to build bridges
of mutual respect and understanding;
study the historical interaction of Mexico and the United States.
To nurture Christian faith as a Discovery
Team we will:
analyze relationships and Bible stories in the Gospel of Mark;;
seek to grow in our relationships to God and others.
