Goals and Strategies

To explore the need for sustainability and focused management of our nation's natural resources we will:

bulletDetermine what causes the variation in climates that we will experience as we progress across the plains, over the mountains and to the coast
bulletTrack the changes in the night sky as we go through a complete lunar cycle sleeping under the stars
bulletExplore the incredibly diverse terrain and land forms of the United States as we hike, drive, canoe, and camp along the route of the original corps of discovery
bulletInvestigate the role of natural and unnatural agents of erosion and weathering in shaping our landscape in the past, present, and future
bulletFormulate possible strategies for managing our grasslands, forests, and waterways in a sustainable manner by studying what they were like in the past and exploring what direction they are currently headed

To discover the historical setting and geographical setting of the original Lewis and Clark trip we will:

bulletVisit at least two Indian nations and seek to understand current Native American issues and concerns
bulletFollow the general path of the original Lewis and Clark trail up the Missouri river, across the Rocky Mountains, and down the Colombia River to the Pacific Ocean
bulletLearn to calculate latitude and longitude along the trail, in a similar style to the original Corps of Discovery
bulletUnravel the historical and political dynamics of the early 19th century Jeffersonian era that prompted the original trip
bulletStudy the history of the original trip through visits to museums, information centers, and by reading the original journals of Lewis and Clark
